Series 2 Episode 2 (Cash)– Before we hear from Lise, Neil and Alexei midway through the episode, Blu-ray producer Richard Latto introduces 3 wonderful extracts from the BBC archives that make up for the absence of certain key people in these commentaries: Sayle If there was a star, it was Rik. I was very fond of him. He could be infuriating but he was naturally very funny. It came easily to him. He wasn’t ever going to do a sophisticated Broadway comedy, he just made you laugh. He was just full of life. This is a 40th Anniversary Edition boxset that contains all the episodes plus a bunch of news special features.

The Young Ones: Complete Collection features never-seen

Andi Oliver (Rip Rig & Panic) I was about 19. When I see it I look like a small child. I think Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders were on that episode because I just remember them being hilariously funny. Gareth Sager [Rip Rig & Panic frontman] decided that we weren’t going to have proper instruments so they were playing washing-up liquid bottles and stuff. There was a lot of alcohol involved. Years later, I saw Lise Mayer and she was like: “God, you guys were wild!” Mayer Alexei was the person that everyone was in awe of. He was more senior and he was actually working class whereas everyone else was just pretending. Having his seal of approval helped. When Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders started doing standup, we wanted them in it, too. We were able to create employment. The only casting we did was for Mike; for everyone else, it was like, “Let’s give that part to so-and-so …” Also Including ‘Alternative Rebellion’, ‘The Making Of The Young Ones’, + ‘The Guest Stars of The Young Ones’ Featurettes I loved this when it was first shown. I bought the DVD and fully expected to love it all over again. I watched several episodes and didn't laugh once. A huge disappointment. At least I have that performance from one of my favourite bands Rip Rig And Panic. The Young Ones - The Complete Collection: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray set. Vyvyan and the Balowsky relative end up in a closet that leads them to Narnia and the Balowsky relative drinks a potion that turns him into a homicidal maniac. No Musical Guest

The extras on this release are contained on a separate disc and are entertaining and informative. The first two options are excerpts from documentaries that reference The Young Ones phenomena. The first, entitled ôCreating the Young Onesö, runs for 15 minutes and is taken out of A History of Alternative Comedy (1999). It describes the chain of events, starting with the comedy group ôTwentieth Century Coyoteö started by Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall, that eventually lead to the sitcom. There are various interviews with the actors, the producer and the writers recalling the period. The next featurette is entitled ôThe Young Ones and the 80sö and is taken from Laughter in the House: The Story of the British Sitcom (1999). This piece also contains interviews of the cast, writers and producers and attempts to explain the sit-comÆs historical significance. This featurette also puts the musical acts into context with the pop music culture at the time. To be honest, your kids are probably going to be going "why is my dad making me watch this rubbish?" The only word of warning I'd give you is this show is very much a product of early-80's Britain; the political references and music will be quite dated/unknown for a lot of Americans, one would imagine. The third option is an on stage performance by Rik Mayall in which he reads a poem to the audience. It is from the Fundamental Frolics concert in 1981 and RikÆs on-stage personality and poem indicate that RikÆs character on The Young Ones was in the works well before they began filming the pilot episode. Sayle When the Comedy Store opened it was kind of a circus, really. Rik and Ade started putting it on the path where it was noticeably different: it wasn’t just mad people; it was people with something identifiably different and identifiably good. And young. Both episodes of Boom Boom... Out Go The Lights ( 1980), introduced by the producer who put alternative comedy on the telly
